The Truth About Your Acne: 7 Common Myths Debunked

Posted by Acne Solutions on Sunday, March 13, 2011

Many myths surround acne and its causes. Relying on them to find a cure for your condition and to regain the clear complexion you desire, is likely to end in disappointment. The root cause of your acne is revealed here, as seven of the most common myths are debunked.
Myth #1: It is caused by stress
The effects of stress can be seriously detrimental to your health, including making an existing acne breakout worse, but stress does not cause your acne. The root cause of your breakouts is internal. The culprit is a build up of excess hormones that create toxins, which your body is trying to excrete. Our bodies eliminate waste through our skin, amongst other ways. When our pores become blocked, we can have an acne breakout.
Myth #2: It is caused by eating chocolate
Chocolate is high in fat and milk chocolate contains dairy products. Certain high fat foods and some high sugar foods, including sodas, make an existing outbreak worse and can start the events that lead to a fresh outbreak. The hormones in milk have a similar effect. This is because these foods hinder the elimination of toxins and excess hormones from your body. This is the root cause of your condition. Eating chocolate as part of a healthy balanced diet will not bring on acne.
Myth #3: It is caused by poor personal hygiene
Few people realise that their skin is, in terms of surface area, the largest organ in their body. Nor do they know the role it plays in eliminating waste from your body. Your pores are the route by which for your body excretes a lubrication called sebum, and releases fluids and gases. Acne breakouts are the external result of your pores being blocked with dirt, dead skin cells, sebum and bacteria. That is why keeping your face clean is essential. Personal hygiene is important. However, on its own it will not prevent a breakout
Myth #4: It only happens to teenagers
It is true that most people who suffer from acne do so in their teenage years. This is a time when their bodies and their hormones are going through great changes. For most people, their acne clears up naturally in their early twenties when their hormones have rebalanced. However, the condition affects one in four adults between the ages of 20 and 40
Myth #5: The sun will make it worse
This is not true. Being out in the fresh air will help the sun's rays to dry up a breakout, not make it worse. You should be cautious and limit your exposure to sun light, as the ultra violet rays can be harmful if we expose our skin to them for too long. We call this 'sunburn'. Sunburn can inflame our breakout.
Myth #6: Steam your face to get rid of acne
Facial steamers open up the pores and cleanse the skin. This may temporarily improve your condition by clearing blocked pores and the build up sebum. However, as steaming your face does to deal with the real cause of your acne, you will soon have another outbreak.
Myth #7: Toothpaste will clear up acne
Using toothpaste as a topical treatment will dry out your skin where you have applied it. Like all other topical treatments, the improvement in your condition, if there is any, will be short-lived.
There is no truth in any of these myths. Each one has taken a manifestation of your condition and wrongly attributed the cause to the prevailing circumstances. Yet, you can have clear skin in as little as a week, if you treat the root cause of your acne.

Common Misconceptions About Acne

Posted by Acne Solutions on Friday, October 29, 2010

At this day and age, even with all the technological advancements that we have made, some beliefs still refuse to die hard. While almost all of us would agree that the earth isn't the center of the universe, some people would still insist on what they falsely believe as facts when it comes to acne. The only trouble with this is that as these wrong beliefs remain, so will the acne problems that continue to hound many of us.
That is why we have written this article. We'd like to help spread the word about how to fight acne effectively-starting with taking down the most common misconceptions about it. So, if you're ready, then, read on.
Misconception #1: Chocolates and Nuts Cause Acne
Up until 10 years ago, the belief that chocolates and nuts cause acne was still prevalent. The belief still persists until today, however, in a number of people. The argument is that these foods are fatty and oily, which can drive our oil glands haywire and so cause acne. However, numerous studies have already debunked this belief.
The truth is that foods rich in carbohydrates are more likely to cause acne in people. That is why we recommend that you minimize your intake of these foods if you don't want to have acne. Better yet, have a healthy diet overall and you'll be just fine, not only from acne, but from a host of other ailments.
Misconception #2: You Need Expensive Products vs. Acne
The cosmetics industry is built upon expensive anti- acne solutions, which is why manufacturers of these products will naturally push for what they're selling. However, you don't actually need expensive anti-acne products if you're only suffering from mild acne. Usually, washing your face with tap water twice a day will suit you just fine. There are, of course, other anti-acne products that you can find at home such as egg and toothpaste. They're cheap and they're easily available-and they work well against your pimples.
Misconception #3: Only Teenagers Have Acne
Remember when you were in your teens? Remember how much you wanted to become an adult to be rid of your acne once and for all? But once you reach adulthood, the reality hits you in the face: you can still have acne even at this stage. Women are more prone to having acne as adults because of their hormonal imbalances. But the good thing is that there are solutions around this such as taking the pill, or taking a holistic approach towards one's acne problems.
There are tons more of misconceptions about acne that continue to be propagated by a lot of people. It's not their intention, of course, to mislead people, only that they're misinformed. That's why we hope that the ones we shared with you in this article will shed some light on the truth behind some of the things that others misunderstand about acne. And with this information, we hope that we have helped you to be acne-free for good!

What Do You Know About Acne Scars?

Posted by Acne Solutions on Thursday, October 28, 2010

Do you know what acne scars? Do you know its causes? Do you know how many types of acne scars that are available? Do you know how you can prevent it? Do you also know how acne scars can be treated? If you don't know, then this article is written just for you.
Scars are visible reminders of injury and tissue repair. In the case of acne scars, the injury is caused by the body's inflammatory response to sebum, bacteria and dead cells in a plugged sebaceous follicle. They are different from spots which may look like it but are not scars as a permanent change has not occurred.
Causes of Acne Scars: Like I said scars are visible reminders of injury and tissue repair. They usually form at the site of an injury to the tissue. When a tissue suffers an injury, the body sends the white blood cells and an array of inflammatory molecules to repair the tissue and fight infection. The white blood cells and inflammatory agents may remain at the site of the acne for days or even weeks and when their job is completed they leave a messy repair site in the form of fibrous scar tissue or even an eroded tissue.
It should be known that some acne do not leave scar e.g. comedos. However inflammatory nodulocystic acne that occur deep into the skin may leave temporary or permanent scars.
Types of Acne Scars: There are two major types of scars that are caused by pimples. This is usually determined by the tissue's response to inflammation.
1. Scars that are caused by increased tissue formation: These are usually called keloids or hypertrophic scars. They are usually associated with excessive amounts of cell substance collagen. The overproduction of collagen is a response of skin cells to injury. Hypertrophic and keloid scars may persist for years but some have been known to diminish in size over time.
2. Scars caused by loss of tissue: These scars are similar to those seen as a result of chicken pox. They are more common than keloids and hypertrophic scars. These scars include Ice-pick (usually small, with a jagged edge and has steep sides), Depressed fibrotic (are usually quite large, with steep sides and sharp edges), Superficial or deep soft scars (are soft to touch, small and have gently sloping rolled edges), Atrophic macules (are soft, may be fairly small when it occurs on the face but larger when found on the body) and Follicular macular atrophy (it occurs more on the chest or the back. It is small and white like whiteheads).
Prevention of Acne Scars: The only sure method of preventing acne is to treat present acne effectively and also prevent new ones from appearing. If the inflammation associated with acne is prevented or treated quickly and with accuracy, then there is a greater chance of not having scars.
Treatment of Acne Scars: A large number of the treatments that are available for treating these scars are through dermatologic surgery which means you need to see a qualified and trusted dermatologist. The dermatologist would let you know which treatment is best for you based on a number of factors. The scar treatments that are available presently include Collagen Injection, Autologous fat transfer, Dermabrasion, Microdermabrasion, Laser treatment, Skin surgery and Skin grafting.
In summary, acne scars are caused by the body's inflammatory response to acne lesions. The best way to prevent acne scars is to prevent acne or treat present ones early, effectively and long enough. There are various acne treatments that are effective and are trusted among billions of people which are presently available. They are far cheaper and safer than the treatments you would need if you develop scars.

What You Need To Know About Your Acne Scars

Posted by Acne Solutions on Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Acne scars are a common problem faced by teens and young adults of all ages. Acne scars are blemishes left behind by acne as a result of healing. Sometimes these acne scars do not go away for years. It is a good idea to arm oneself with information about acne scars for a better understanding of the problem and thereby help you attack the root of the problem. This article will discuss the causes and types of acne scars and resources on treating and preventing acne scars.
There are a number of factors that cause acne scars. Scars are generally formed at a site of injury and are a natural result of healing. Whenever tissue suffers injury, as in the case of acne, the body rushes to the task of repairing the tissue. This repairing process is sometimes messy therefore some acne leave behind permanent scars.
Acne scars are largely classified in to two categories: Raise scars and depressed scars. Raised scars or hypertrophic scars are excess skin mass left behind on the skin surface after the acne has healed. These scars are often mistaken for acne and people often wait for the acne to heal on its own. The fact is these scars will not go away for many years to come.
The second type of acne scars are depressed scars. This is the most common form of acne scar found in people. This is when a depression is left at the spot where acne was present. Depression scars are harder to treat than raised scars. These scars form as a result of the acne getting attacked by white blood cells and some collagen being lost in the process.
Acne scars are the visual reminders of past acne that was on facial skin. Scars are caused by the spontaneous response of the body to acne lesions. These scars are treatable by various treatment methods that are available in the market. The effectiveness of various treatments varies from person to person. You must consult your dermatologist to decide which one is suitable for you.

Your Quick Guide to Facts About Acne Scars

Posted by Acne Solutions

As a registered nurse, I have learned a lot over the years about acne scars, acne scar treatments, and acne scar removal.
Acne is one of most common skin conditions in the world, affecting more than 40 million Americans. Nearly 80 percent of people from ages 11 to 30 years old have acne, most often on the face, chest and back.
But acne isn't restricted to any one age group. Adults who are in their 20s, 30s and even into their 40s can get acne.
Most cases of acne do respond to treatment and clear up without leaving any scars. Healed acne leaves scars in some people however, and it isn't easy to predict who will end up with scars after an acne outbreak and who won't.
Severe, inflamed, cystic acne always leaves scars after healing. And in some people even superficially inflamed acne can result in scarring.
Whether acne scarring is deep or superficial, extensive or scattered, the end result can be less than desirable and even disturbing.
Acne scars can give the skin an aging look. Scars may also contribute to a person looking older than their age as the skin loses its elasticity over the years.
A number of treatments are currently available to remove or improve acne scars. The type and depth of the scars influences the choice of treatment.
Here are some basic facts about acne scars:
Facts about the types of acne scars: Acne scars result from increased tissue formation, response to the inflammation of acne and loss of tissue.
Facts about increased tissue formation: Scars caused by increased tissue formation are caused by a build-up of collagen in the skin. These are called hypertrophic and keloid scars.
Keloids usually are found among several family members. There is a genetic predisposition to form keloids after tissue injury. For example, African-Americans often are prone to keloid formation. Some families also tend to more so, form hypertrophic or thickened scars.
Facts about scars resulting from loss of tissue: Acne scars resulting from loss of tissue are more common than scars resulting from increased tissue formation.
There are several types. They are ice-pick scars, depressed fibrotic scars, superficial and deep soft scars, and atrophic macules.
Ice-pick scars get their name from the way they look. They may be superficial or deep, are usually small and have steep sides like an ice-pick wound. They may be hard or soft.
The soft scars are usually more superficial and the hard scars are usually deeper. The bottom of the hard scar under the skin may be wider than the scar at the surface of the skin.
Depressed fibrotic scars are usually large scars that have sharp edges and steep sides. They look very much like deep chicken pox scars.
Superficial and deep soft scars vary in size. They have sloping edges that merge with normal skin.
Atrophic macules are soft, flat scars that often have a bluish or violet color on white skin due to the underlying blood vessels. These macules tend to fade away over time and become less obvious.
Acne scars are an ongoing reminder of a common skin condition that can cause embarrassment and social isolation. Acne scars can also contribute to the appearance of premature aging.
The good news is that today, there are several types of treatments to choose from for acne scar removal,. See your dermatologist or dermatologic surgeon for the best acne scar treatment for you.

Clear Skin Diet Cheats - Time To Think A Little Differently About Acne Problems

Posted by Acne Solutions on Friday, September 17, 2010

Comments (0)

Many folks have different opinions about acne being related to a persons diet or the concept of "clear skin diet cheats".

Over the years, we've all heard various opinions about chocolate or "sweets" contributing to the problem of acne. Some would agree, some won't - but, it's becoming more logical that a persons diet is most likely a huge factor in skin problems.

It just makes sense.

It seems to be pretty easy to understand that what we put in our bodies will have an impact on a number of things like our mood, our energy levels, our sleep and a number of other things.

Seems safe to say that it could have an effect on a persons skin too, right?

So, doesn't it stand to reason that we could come up with some simple clear skin diet cheats - or should we say, common sense ideas and solutions that could help quite easily.

Many folks today believe that glucose (simple sugar) can cause pimples or acne on various parts of the body. There seems to be a link between the problem and the glycemic index of persons dieting habits. The Glycemic Index (simply speaking) is the body's gauge and pace of the amount of sugar increase in the body as related to the foods you consume on a day to day basis.

A high glycemic index translates into high blood sugar and translates into an increase in insulin and other hormones in the body.

It's been said that high levels of these hormones increase the production of something called "sebum". Sebum could be described as a greasy-like substance that could cause clogs pores, pimples, or you guessed it... acne problems.

There have been comparisons of people who ate low glycemic foods and others who just ate the "standard" diet high in carbs. The people with the low glycemic diet showed positive changes in their complexion. This would sure make you wonder about the concept of diet and complexion, wouldn't it? So, why not come up with a way to cheat the body from causing skin problems. This is where the idea of clear skin diet cheats makes so much sense and the good news is that it isn't that difficult to do!

First of all, it would appear that a person with acne problems would be well served to minimize sugar in their diet. This doesn't mean sugar as we think of it (as in the white tasty stuff).

It's important to recognize other foods that the body breaks down and converts to sugar. These include:

1) Starches

2) Potatoes

3) White Breads

4) Pasta

5) Several processed foods

Don't be fooled into thinking you're cutting back on sugar intake by just avoiding candy or sweet junk foods. Remember what we said about white bread. The best "healthy" intention of a sandwich on white bread translates into high sugars once broken down by the body. Ditto with pasta, etc...

It would sound as if a person can't eat anything good or tasty. This couldn't be further from the truth. All it takes is shift in the way you think. Simply replacing just a couple snacks or meals with a healthy alternative goes a long way and it's quite easy to do! It's easy to cheat your body of the bad things that cause problems and instead, replace it with some good things.

Give it a try for just a couple weeks. You may just find that clear skin diet cheats are the most sensible things you'll ever do for acne - and as a bonus, you'll start feeling healthier as well!
